Fall Family Photo Outfits 2026 | Style Guide

Fall is one of my favorite seasons for family photos. With the cooler weather, golden light, changing scenery, and the cozy textures of fall wardrobes, it's a wonderful time to update your family photos.
One of the first questions I often hear after a family books their session is:
“What should we wear?”
The good news is that you don't need everyone dressed in the same colors to achieve a coordinated family look. In fact, it's better if you don't.
Instead, select a color palette you love and build around it with different shades, textures, layers, and fabrics. The aim is for everyone to look cohesive without appearing as if you've purchased matching outfits for the whole family.
For 2026, I've assembled eight fall family outfit ideas, ranging from richer seasonal colors to softer, timeless neutrals. Each board includes outfit inspiration for women, men, girls, and boys, along with links to make shopping easier.
2026 Fall Style Trends for Family Photos
This fall's color palettes are trending towards warm, rich, and earthy tones, but there's still plenty of space for softer shades.
Consider burgundy, chocolate brown, olive, navy, muted blues, creamy neutrals, warm yellows, denim, and a variety of textures.
Here are some tips for planning your family's outfits:
Coordinate rather than match. Select a palette and distribute the colors across the family instead of dressing everyone in the same hue.
Incorporate different textures. Fabrics like knits, denim, corduroy, pleats, suede, and other textured materials add depth without making an outfit seem overwhelming.
Let one outfit be the focal point. If you find a dress, sweater, or another piece you really love, use it as a starting point and coordinate everyone else's outfits around it.
Be intentional with patterns. One or two subtle patterns can look stunning. Too many clashing prints can become distracting in photos.
Consider your setting. A palette that looks stunning in a golden field might appear differently in an urban or heavily wooded environment.

A Few Final Tips Before Your Session
Remember, these boards are inspiration, not rules. You do not need to purchase an entirely new wardrobe to have beautiful family photos.
Start by looking through what your family already owns. You may already have the perfect jeans, boots, sweater, or neutral basics. Then use the boards to fill in the gaps or help you decide which colors work well together.
Most importantly, choose clothes that feel like your family. You should be able to move, play with your kids, sit down, snuggle, and actually enjoy your session. The best outfit is one you aren't constantly adjusting or worrying about once we start shooting.
